On April 25th ESNKY board members, staff and supporters gathered for dinner at Covington Latin School to thank the many community volunteers who play a vital role in the shelter’s operation. While the contributions of all the shelter’s supporters are valuable, two individuals and one organization were singled out for special recognition.
The R.C. Durr Foundation was awarded the Ralph Drees Impact Award, designed to recognize an individual or organization that had a tremendous impact on the lives of individuals experiencing homelessness. Foundation grant funds were used to add a second paid staff person during overnight hours at the Shelter. Additional night staff made the Shelter more secure for guests and volunteers alike, and created opportunities for more direct services.
Dedicated volunteer Theresa Smith was given the Beyond the Call of Duty Award, recognizing her as an exceptional advocate for individuals struggling with homelessness. In addition to the many hours she spends assisting Shelter operations, Smith organized and conducted a yard sale to benefit the Shelter.
Former-guest-turned-staff member Paul Newman was awarded the Leroy Collins Award, which he accepted at the Shelter just before he passed due to complications from a long-term illness. Newman, who was a treasured presence for colleagues and guests alike, was selected for the compassion and confidence he provided to current guests. The Leroy Collins Award recognizes the impact made by former guests on the organization.
Shelter volunteers provided meals and material support for over 12,000 guest nights during the winter season. This included seventeen days of 24-hour sheltering during the depth of winter – at one point, the Shelter was continuously open for over 200 hours! Over 100 men received support during the summer recovery program, and volunteers helped 285 guests during summer shower and laundry outreach.
