Every person deserves a place to feel safe and comfortable

Covington Resident Emily McNulty

I have lived in Covington, across the street from the Emergency Shelter of NKY, for two and a half years. When I first moved to the area, I began noticing the line that would form outside the building across the street each night. Living in Covington and across the river from downtown Cincinnati, I frequently pass individuals sleeping on the sidewalks or carrying around their belongings. I was unaware that my neighbors were providing food and shelter for the less fortunate.

This winter I began volunteering weekly at ESNKY. As a volunteer, I assist with providing meals for the guests, setting out hygiene supplies, organizing donations, doing laundry, and providing the guests with items they may need. Volunteering at the shelter has reminded me that every person deserves a place to feel safe and comfortable. Everyone deserves access to clean clothing, hygiene products, and protection from the brutal winter days and nights. I enjoy bringing smiles to the faces of the guests, listening to their stories, hearing their jokes. Being a volunteer has reminded me to greet everyone I come into contact with, whether that be with words or a friendly smile. Something as simple as a smile can alter someones day. I’ve learned that everyone’s situation is not the same and the reasons that lead them to ESNKY will differ. Many of the individuals suffering from homelessness do not fulfill the stigmas behind it.

I continue to return to the shelter because I enjoy assisting the others there in providing an evening of safety, respect, and comfort to the guests, which is something that they may not experience daily. I have thoroughly enjoyed my experiences and the relationships formed at ESNKY and encourage others to learn more about the shelter and become involved as well.
