Position: Shelter Advocate
Reports to: Operations Manager (1st Shift), Program Manager (2nd and 3rd Shifts)
Employment status: hourly, full or part time
The Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky (ESNKY) provides immediate life saving, life changing low barrier shelter and services to adults experiencing homelessness in our community. We believe homelessness is an emergency and that shelter is a basic necessity for human beings. We believe that only when this basic necessity is provided, do human beings have the ability to recover from homelessness. We believe that our ability to always answer the phone or the door will give adults the shelter services and support they need, even if it is just for one night.
Position Overview
The Shelter Advocate position works as a part of team to provide services to all guests in a compassionate manner while following ESNKY policies and procedures.
Job Description
• Supervise guests and respond to all guest questions and concerns
• Complete required documents during intake process for each guest
• Coordinate bed assignments and follow daily routines for each shift
• Provide each guest in shelter with the necessary hygiene and clothing items.
• Ensure that shelter is kept clean and organized.
• Answer shelter phone and assist caller with referrals for services. Take messages or forward to staff voice mail as needed.
• Welcome and monitor all shift volunteers and meal volunteers in the building as needed.
• Track shelter inventory of material needs and complete daily check list.
• Collect and launder, towels, bed linens and blankets during shift.
• Complete shift log and critical incident reports each shift.
• Explain shelter requirements to new guests and ensure our community rules are followed
• Provide active coverage and maintain safety and security in building during shift
• Provide emergency assistance to guests and co-workers as necessary
• Perform housekeeping and other maintenance tasks as needed.
• Follow all shift procedures to ensure consistency and efficiency.
Qualifications
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, substance abuse, mental health, housing and or criminal justice system preferred
• Work nights, weekends and holidays as needed
• Must have reliable transportation
Skills & Abilities
• Experience in crisis intervention and problem solving with ability to diffuse situations
• Role model positive, professional behavior including appearance and communication with others.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational, and computer literacy skills
• Answer phone, provide information and take messages
• Proficient in Microsoft Office. Experience in Clarity or other homeless data system a plus.
Physical Requirements (% of time spent performing requirements)
• Must be able to lift 40+ lbs.
• Walking including bending, lifting and twisting– 90%
• Sitting – 10%
Salary and Benefits: Salary is $14.43 per hour and will include paid time off for vacation and illness and cell phone reimbursement. Preference will be given to individuals who present qualifications beyond the minimum.
