Volunteer Spotlight: Donna Esposito
Nov 18, 2025

The experience of being involved with the shelter all these years has made me grateful for what I have, and I like sharing it with others. I have spoken to my friends about the wonderful events at the shelter providing medical needs, social services, a safe, loving, and clean environment these brothers and sisters deserve and have a right to as any human does.
My involvement with the Emergency Shelter began shortly after Sister Janet Marie Bucher, CDP, invited me to an open house on Scott Street in 2010. At that time, I was director of the Associates of the Congregation of Divine Providence.
I noticed how resolute and compassionate the staff were, as well as the importance of providing food to those they serve. Volunteers brought food prepared ahead of time from their parishes and organizations around the area. I was struck by the goodness of so many people donating their time, energy and of course the various foods.
I then presented my experience visiting the shelter to our Associates of the Congregation of Divine Providence during our monthly prayer gathering. They all agreed that it would be a worthwhile outreach ministry. We began providing sandwiches, cookies, and fruit once a month. Associates would volunteer to bring the food to the shelter for the meal one Saturday a month. Since ESNKY moved to W. 13th Street, the associates decided we would continue this outreach. It has been three and a half years since we have been cooking monthly meals.
Being that I am Italian, I love to cook recipes my grandmother and mother cooked. One thing is when I cook, the love I put into it is rewarding when I hear comments such as “Oh this smells and tastes better than Olive Garden!” The smiles, comments and gratitude are enough for me. There are times when I have a chance to talk one on one with a guest who shares a bit of their story with me. Another comment made to me was “These guys know this is all done with love.” It made my day!
I hope I am the face of God to them. That is the purpose of my commitment to cook, serve and smile.
