Life Saving, Life Changing

Volunteers Honored for Dedication and Service

Nearly 75 volunteers and supporters of ESNKY gathered at the Devou Golf and Event Center April 23 to help ESNKY celebrate the important role volunteers play in the life of the shelter.  The event had special significance as 2019 marks the shelter’s 10th year of life-saving, life-changing service to the community.

While every contribution is a valued gift, two groups and one individual received special recognition at the event. PeeWee’s Prayer Group was commended for being a longtime provider of guest meals and received the Beyond the Call of Duty Award. The Ralph Drees Impact Award was given to St. Elizabeth Healthcare in recognition of the organization’s assistance in addressing the medical needs of shelter guests. Finally, Doug ‘Bo’ Bohannon was honored with the Leroy Collins Award for his service as a shelter volunteer and ESNKY board member.  The award recognizes the impact made by a former recipient of shelter services.

Shelter volunteers provided meals and material support to 660 guests for over 12,000 guest nights during the 2018-2019 winter season.  This included nine days of 24-hour sheltering when daytime temperatures were life threatening.  Thirty-three men received support during the 2018 summer recovery program, and volunteers helped 279 guests during 2018 summer shower and laundry outreach.
