A Heart for the Homeless

What would drive this normal 11-year-old student who enjoys basketball and volleyball and social studies class to this level of involvement? Kristi says that Paige just has a heart for the homeless. Paige says she found out that many do not choose to be homeless and it makes her feel really good to be able to actually help. Just recently during the “Kentucky Gives Day” on May 14th, Paige helped raise $200 for the shelter. When asked if she planned on continuing her help, Paige said she planned on still putting out collection bins several times a winter for items that ESNKY says are in short supply. She’s presently brainstorming some ideas for service projects through her school…some alone…some with other St Pius students. Paige says she’s not sure what she wants to do when an adult, but she is considering pursuing a career as a lawyer. We feel that whatever Paige decides to do in life, she will be successful!

Below is the paper that Paige wrote for class and verbally delivered to the entire school:

Homelessness

Being homeless is a very important topic to be aware of. Do you know what it means to be homeless? Its right in the name, it means you don’t have enough money to afford shelter. Maybe you were careless with your money, lost your job, or spent all your money on drugs. Maybe you made choices not even knowing how it could affect your life.  About three quarters of the world are homeless.  Being homeless could really have a big impact on life. For example, you have to beg for people to give you money! Imagine you were out on a street for 3 years with a sign begging for money but you only make about a dollar a day.  Fortunately, there are homeless shelters to help those in need.  The Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky is the biggest homeless shelter in the area.  Our family has been helping that shelter for over 4 years. I really have a heart for the homeless. You can donate too! The emergency shelter has needs year-round, but especially needy winters.  I would love it if each of you donated at least 1 box of cereal; the little things matter. If you’ve been to church you’ve probably seen the collection bins for the shelter.  They are also in need of coffee, shampoo, slightly used sneakers, toothpaste, and toothbrushes. The shelter would also welcome pictures or cards made by students; please no religious things messages, just a message of encouragement!

Again, I would like to challenge every student to bring in a box of cereal to donate to the homeless shelter.  If you do, you can trade it in for a piece of candy. Thank you for listening and God Bless you.
