Life Saving, Life Changing

Visitors to Open House Stock the Shelves With Much-Needed Supplies

Each year, as weather turns cooler and trees more colorful, the attention of the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky turns to preparing for its “Life Saving” winter mission. This year is no exception as the ESNKY marks its 10th year of providing life-saving cold shelter in NKY.

To welcome the winter season, the Shelter hosted its annual Open House on Thursday, October 11, 2018. Supporters, volunteers, and guests joined staff and members of the Board of Directors for light hors d’oeuvres and tours of the Shelter.

“The Open House is always a great time for reconnecting with volunteers and supporters,” said Executive Director Kim Webb, “and of course it is also an important chance to stock the shelves with the supplies we need to serve our guests.”

Several visitors to the Open House made donations of toiletries and personal care items, which were critically needed. “Our guests are almost always in need of razors,” according to Operations Manager Brittney Kane, “and as the winter approaches it is good to replenish our supply of toothpaste, toothbrushes and deodorant.”

Kane added that lightweight, twin-size blankets, as well as twin-size sheets, are still needed. Backpacks and sturdy, reusable bags are also still needed since guests must take all their personal items with them when they leave the Shelter each morning.

Founded in 2008, the Emergency Shelter of Northern Kentucky is the Northern Kentucky region’s only cold emergency shelter. It provides emergency sheltering services to adult men and women, which include a warm meal, the opportunity to shower, and a chance to launder clothing. The “Life Saving” winter mission ordinarily runs from November 1 through March 31. For more information, contact the Shelter at (859) 291-4445.
