Have you ever heard someone say a phrase that stops you in your tracks?
“I’m on my way home” was that phrase for me and it was said by a man in our summer program. For him, home did not mean the shelter; home meant his own apartment! He had just received his keys and was talking to his new neighbor. He had graduated from our life changing summer shelter program and excitingly told his neighbor “I’m on my way home!
The summer transitional housing program is in full swing. We currently have 30 men ready to take the steps necessary to gain keys to their own place. Program requirements include employment or volunteering, saving 70% of their income, attend appointments and meet with staff for a weekly check in. Their goal is to obtain and sustain in housing. Last summer, 107 men entered with 47 exiting holding keys being able to say, “I’m on my way home.”
Jeff is one of those 47 men. After 5 years coming to our emergency winter shelter, he showed up at the back door last summer. He admitted to us if he kept drinking and staying outside, he would probably die. He worked on his sobriety, found a job, saved and… well, you can hear Jeff tell his full story in this video. His story highlights our mission of continuing to be the safe & welcoming place to any adult experiencing homelessness for whatever their reason is.
We are able to help adults that would otherwise be unsheltered because of the private financial support you provide. Your donation will also support our shower/laundry program for adult men & women that operates for 20 hours per week You can donate using the enclosed slip/envelope, donate online here, or call us at (859)291-4555.
Your tax-deductible donation is greatly appreciated by each and every man who holds a key to his own home and be able to say “I’m on my way home.”
